France | Toubib or not Toubib Inside the psychiatric asylum there is a room funnily called Non-Faire (Ndt. without doing). And these two words become even more paradoxical when you look at the paintings on the walls done by the patients. You can hear some classical and modern music and listen to it. On a typing machine you can write some personal letters or a poem or a novel: the halting lines, the syntax and spelling mistakes do not count here, the literary value of these texts are irrelevant! No locked doors any longer! In a second you find yourself navigating outside the hospital walls, where the high walls topped with glass bottles fragments do not exist anymore. p.s. It is a pun as toubib is the French slang for doctor and the sentence recalls the pronunciation of the English to be or not to be (from a writing on a wall inside the atelier). |
