India | Ode to the wather goddess
Varanasi, the holy city, the city of Shiva, on the banks of the river Ganga (Ganges), the Hindu sacred place.
The water of the Ganga has the power to wash away all the sins of mortals and it is the perfect place to die in order to reach the Moksha, a human liberation from the cycle of birth and re-birth, the cycle of reincarnation, in order to finally earn access to heaven.
Every day along the 7 kilometres of the river nearly 60,000 people descend the ghats to perform the ritual bathing ceremony. The purpose being to cleanse themselves of the sins of their current and past lives.
At the same time along the same stretch of land 30 sewerage systems pouring their waters into the river. A non-profit association, the Sankat Mochan Foundation, is carrying out a project aimed to help the Great Mother to recover her breath.
